root canal treatment

root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a dental procedure to treat infection or inflammation at the centre of a tooth.

what is a root canal?

a core of blood vessels and nerves are at the centre of each tooth. this living tissue is called the pulp and is contained in the root canal system which extends from the crown of the tooth to the end (or apex) of the root.

the crown is the part of the tooth that is visible in the mouth. the root anchors the tooth into the bone of the jaw.

when is root canal treatment necessary?

when bacteria attack the pulp within the root canal, the soft tissue may become inflamed or infected.

the infection can be caused by bacteria invading the tooth as a result of tooth decay. it may also be caused by trauma or leaky fillings.

how is root canal treatment carried out at sweetsmile?

endodontic treatment can often be performed in one or two visits, beginning with a dental examination with your dentist and x-rays of the tooth being taken. treatment begins with a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth before making a small opening in the crown. the pulp will then be cleaned and disinfected.

the root canal will then be filled with a biocompatible material and an adhesive cement will be used to seal crown.
