Dental implants in Hendon
A missing tooth affects more than your smile. It can make chewing harder, cause neighbouring teeth to drift, and over time the jawbone where the tooth used to be starts to shrink. A dental implant replaces the root of the tooth as well as the visible crown, so it looks, feels and works like a natural tooth.
At Sweetsmile we offer implant treatment for single teeth, several teeth and full arches. Every patient starts with a free implant consultation.
What is a dental implant?
An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone. Over the following months the bone bonds to the surface of the implant, which gives it a very secure foundation. Once healed, a custom-made crown, bridge or denture is fixed on top. Unlike a denture, there is nothing to take out at night, and unlike a bridge, the teeth either side do not need to be cut down.
Who is suitable for implants?
Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone are suitable. We look at a few things at your consultation:
- the health of your gums and remaining teeth
- how much bone there is at the implant site, checked with X-rays or a 3D scan
- your medical history, including medication
- whether you smoke, as smoking slows healing and raises the risk of implant failure
If there is not enough bone, a bone graft may be possible first. We will tell you plainly if implants are not the right option for you and talk through the alternatives.
What happens during treatment?
- Free consultation. We examine your mouth, take any X-rays needed, discuss your options and give you a written treatment plan with costs.
- Implant placement. The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Most patients say it is more comfortable than they expected, similar to having a tooth out.
- Healing. The bone bonds to the implant over roughly three to six months. A temporary tooth can usually be fitted in the meantime so you are never left with a gap.
- Fitting the final tooth. Once the implant is stable, we fit your permanent crown, bridge or denture, matched to the colour and shape of your own teeth.
Caring for your implant
Implants cannot decay, but the gum around them can become inflamed in the same way as gum disease. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth, and keep up regular check-ups and hygiene visits. With good care an implant can last for many years.
Implants compared with other options
If you are weighing up an implant against a bridge or a denture, our guide Missing tooth: implant, bridge or denture? sets out the pros and cons of each. Dentures start from £540 per arch, and you can see all our prices on the fees page.
Frequently asked questions
Does having an implant hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during it. Some soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards is normal and is usually managed with ordinary painkillers.
How long does the whole process take?
From placement to the final tooth, usually three to six months. It can be longer if a bone graft is needed first.
How much do dental implants cost?
The cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced and whether any extra work, such as a bone graft, is needed. You will receive a full written quote at your free consultation before you commit to anything.
Am I too old for implants?
There is no upper age limit. General health and bone quality matter more than age.
