At SweetSmile, we believe the future of dentistry is not just about repairing teeth. It is about preserving them.
Imagine discovering the very earliest signs of tooth decay and having another option beyond the traditional drill and filling.
Thanks to advances in biomimetic dental science, this is becoming a reality.
We are excited by Curodontâ„¢ by vVARDIS, an innovative treatment designed to help stop and reverse early tooth decay by encouraging the tooth to rebuild lost minerals without drilling or injections.
It represents an exciting shift towards a more conservative, preventative approach to dentistry: intervening earlier, preserving more of your natural tooth and potentially avoiding more extensive treatment.
What exactly is Curodont?
Curodont is a professional dental treatment developed by Swiss dental science company vVARDIS. It uses advanced biomimetic technology, meaning it takes inspiration from the way nature builds and repairs tissues.
The treatment is designed for early tooth decay, before a hole has formed in the tooth.
Your enamel is the hard, protective outer layer of your teeth. Although it is the hardest substance in the human body, it can gradually lose essential minerals when exposed to acids produced by bacteria in dental plaque and by sugary or acidic foods and drinks.
In its earliest stages, this mineral loss may appear as a white spot or an area of weakened enamel. At this point, the surface may still be intact.
Traditionally, these areas are managed with preventive measures and careful monitoring. If decay progresses and a cavity develops, a filling may become necessary.
Curodont offers another option for carefully selected early lesions: helping the tooth repair mineral loss before a conventional filling is needed.
The science: helping your tooth repair itself
Curodont uses a specially designed, self-assembling peptide known as P11-4. Peptides are short chains of amino acids: small building blocks used in biological systems.
Here is how the treatment works:
1. Target the early damage
Your dentist or dental hygienist assesses the tooth to establish whether the area is suitable for treatment. Curodont is intended for early decay, where the tooth surface has not yet broken down into a cavity.
2. The peptide travels into the weakened area
The liquid treatment penetrates the porous area affected by early mineral loss.
3. A microscopic framework forms
The peptide molecules assemble into a tiny scaffold within the lesion. This provides a structure that encourages minerals to collect where they are needed.
4. Minerals help rebuild the tooth
Calcium and phosphate, minerals naturally present in saliva, can accumulate around this framework and contribute to the formation of hydroxyapatite, the mineral that gives enamel its strength.
5. The early lesion may become harder and more stable
The aim is to reduce the activity of the decay and encourage mineral repair within the affected area, helping preserve the natural tooth.
This approach is known as guided enamel regeneration or, more broadly, biomimetic remineralisation.
It is important to understand that this is not the same as growing an entirely new tooth. The treatment aims to repair mineral loss in suitable early lesions; it cannot rebuild tooth structure that has already been lost through a fully developed cavity.
What could Curodont mean for you?
Less drilling, where appropriate
For eligible early lesions, treatment may be possible without removing tooth structure with a drill. This can help avoid a filling at that stage, provided the lesion responds and remains suitable for non-invasive management.
No injection for the application itself
Curodont is applied to the tooth surface. The treatment itself generally does not require local anaesthetic, making it an appealing option for patients who dislike needles or dental procedures.
Preserve more of your natural tooth
Natural tooth structure is precious. By treating decay early, we aim to preserve as much healthy tooth as possible and reduce the need for more invasive procedures.
A quick, minimally invasive appointment
The application is relatively straightforward and can be completed within a short appointment. Your dentist will explain the preparation required and the expected treatment time for your particular tooth.
Suitable for selected children's and adults' teeth
Early decay can affect both baby teeth and adult teeth. Depending on the product's approved indications and the individual clinical situation, Curodont may be an option for children as well as adults.
A more proactive approach to dental care
Curodont gives dental professionals another tool between prevention alone and conventional restorative treatment. It supports a philosophy of identifying problems early and intervening as conservatively as possible.
What does the research say?
Curodont is supported by clinical research into self-assembling peptide P11-4 technology.
A randomised clinical trial published in Clinical Oral Investigations in 2020 investigated the treatment of early enamel lesions and found that P11-4 treatment promoted regression of early carious lesions compared with fluoride varnish in the study conditions.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of the American Dental Association assessed six clinical trials. The authors concluded that Curodont Repair likely improves the arrest of early caries and reduces lesion size. They also highlighted limitations in the available evidence, including risks of bias and the need for longer-term studies.
These findings are promising. They support Curodont as a useful option for selected early lesions, while reminding us that outcomes depend on the individual tooth, the stage of decay and ongoing preventive care.
Our approach at SweetSmile is to combine innovative treatments with careful diagnosis, evidence-based decisions and ongoing monitoring.
Is Curodont suitable for everyone?
No. The most important factor is identifying the right stage of decay.
Curodont is designed for early lesions where the tooth surface remains intact. If decay has progressed to form a cavity, a conventional filling or another treatment may still be required.
Your dentist will assess the tooth, which may include clinical examination and X-rays where appropriate. The depth and location of the lesion, your oral hygiene, diet and individual risk of decay all help determine the best treatment.
After treatment, regular reviews remain important. Good brushing with fluoride toothpaste, reducing the frequency of sugary snacks and drinks, and attending dental appointments all help protect your teeth.
Curodont is not a substitute for these measures, and treatment cannot guarantee that decay will not progress.
A glimpse into the future of dentistry
For many years, dentistry has relied on a familiar principle: when decay becomes a cavity, remove the damaged tissue and restore the tooth.
Modern preventive dentistry is expanding the options available before that point.
Curodont represents an exciting development in this shift, using biomimetic science to encourage mineral repair, preserve natural tooth structure and offer selected patients a drill-free alternative for early decay.
It will not replace every filling, and it is not suitable for every tooth. But for the right patient, at the right stage, it offers a promising new way to approach a very common dental problem.

Clinical note: Curodont is a professional treatment, and suitability is determined by a dental professional following an individual assessment. Evidence relates primarily to specific early, non-cavitated caries lesions; results vary. Curodont does not replace fillings when a cavity has already formed.
