Whitening is one of the simplest ways to improve a smile, but it is also an area where people get caught out. Here is what you need to know before you book.
Who can legally whiten teeth?
In the UK, tooth whitening is classed as dentistry. Only a dentist, or a registered dental hygienist or therapist working to a dentist’s prescription, can carry it out. Whitening products stronger than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can only be provided through a dental professional, and only after a dental examination. Whitening is not allowed for anyone under 18, except to treat disease.
That means whitening carried out in beauty salons or kiosks is illegal. You can check whether someone is registered on the General Dental Council website.
Why an examination comes first
Whitening only works on natural teeth. Fillings, crowns and veneers stay the same colour. Decay, gum disease or worn enamel need to be dealt with first, otherwise whitening can be uncomfortable or uneven. Some discolouration, for example from certain medicines or a tooth that has died, does not respond well to whitening, and other options may suit you better.
How home whitening works
We take impressions of your teeth and make custom-fitted trays. You wear the trays at home with a professional-strength gel for the period we advise. Most people see results within 10 to 14 days. Because the trays fit closely, the gel stays on your teeth and away from your gums.
We recommend a hygiene clean before you start, so the gel can reach the tooth surface rather than plaque and tartar.
Side effects
Some people notice temporary sensitivity during whitening. It usually settles once you finish. Using a sensitive toothpaste and taking a break for a day or two helps.
How long do results last?
Results can last a long time, but coffee, tea, red wine and smoking will gradually stain teeth again. Keeping your trays means you can top up with fresh gel when you need to.
