What is Airflow teeth cleaning?

Airflow is a way of cleaning teeth that uses a jet of warm water, air and very fine powder. It removes plaque and surface stains from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and gets into places that traditional scraping and polishing can miss.

How it works

The hygienist directs a gentle spray at the teeth. The powder particles lift away plaque and staining, and the water washes it away. Because it does not rely on scraping, most people find it more comfortable than a traditional polish, including people with sensitive teeth.

Airflow is often combined with ultrasonic scaling to remove hardened tartar below and around the gum line.

Who is it good for?

  • coffee and tea drinkers

  • smokers or former smokers

  • people wearing braces or Invisalign aligners, as it cleans well around brackets and attachments

  • people with implants, crowns or veneers

  • anyone who finds traditional cleaning uncomfortable

Is Airflow the same as whitening?

No. Airflow removes surface stains and can make teeth look noticeably brighter, but it does not change the natural colour of the tooth. If you want your teeth lighter than their natural shade, you need teeth whitening. Having an Airflow clean before whitening gives the best result.

How often should I have it?

Most people benefit from a hygiene visit every six months. If you are prone to staining or gum problems, your hygienist may suggest every three or four months.
